Environmental management

ISO 14001

ISO 14001 is the international standard for an environmental management system. It requires you to know which of your activities affect the environment, comply with the law that applies to them, and demonstrably reduce the impacts you can control.

Standard
ISO 14001:2015
Accreditation
ANAB and EIAC
Typical timeline
Eight to twelve weeks for a single site, longer where an aspects register has to be built from scratch or where compliance obligations span several authorities.

Who needs it

Manufacturers, contractors and logistics operators, particularly those bidding for work with UAE government entities or reporting into a parent company's sustainability commitments. Increasingly requested alongside ISO 9001 as part of an integrated management system.

What the standard requires

Environmental aspects and impacts
A register of what your operations do to air, water, land and resources. This covers the aspects you influence without directly controlling them, such as your waste contractors.
Compliance obligations
Federal and emirate-level environmental law, trade license conditions, and any client requirements you have accepted. Auditors check that you can evidence current compliance against each one.
Lifecycle perspective
Consider impacts across the life of your product or service, from raw material to end of life. The standard stops short of requiring a full lifecycle assessment, but it does require you to account for what happens after despatch.
Operational control and emergency preparedness
Controls for significant aspects, and tested plans for spills, releases and other environmental incidents.
Monitoring and improvement
Measured environmental performance against objectives for consumption, waste and emissions, with action when a trend moves the wrong way.

Why organizations certify

  • Required or scored on most UAE government and semi-government tenders
  • Evidences the environmental element of ESG reporting to parent companies and investors
  • Reduces utility, waste-disposal and material cost through measured consumption
  • Demonstrates regulatory compliance to authorities before an incident forces the question

What drives the fee

Audit duration under our accreditation is set by defined criteria, not by negotiation. These are the factors that move it, so you can see where your quote comes from:

  • Environmental risk of the processes in scope. Chemical handling and heavy industry audit longer than office-based operations
  • Number of employees and sites
  • Whether certification is combined with ISO 9001 or ISO 45001, which shares audit time
  • Volume and complexity of applicable compliance obligations

How the audit runs

  1. 01

    Certification

    Stage 1 and Stage 2

Two stages. Stage 1 is a document review and information gathering exercise; Stage 2 is the audit that determines certification.

  2. 02

    1st Annual Surveillance

    First follow-up audit

A follow-up audit in the first year of the cycle, confirming the system is still operating and that corrective actions were effective.

  3. 03

    2nd Annual Surveillance

    Second follow-up audit

The second follow-up audit, in the final year before recertification, covering the parts of the system not sampled in year one.

  4. 04

    Recertification

Renewal audit for the next cycle

A renewal audit before the certificate expires, assessing the whole management system and its performance across the full three years.

Questions we are asked

Can we certify ISO 14001 and ISO 9001 together?

Yes, and it is usually cheaper. Both standards share the same high-level structure, so leadership, planning, competence, internal audit and management review are audited once across the integrated system instead of twice.

Do we need to have improved our environmental performance already?

You need a system that is producing improvement, with objectives and measured results. A first-cycle organization does not need years of trend data, but it does need to show that it measures the right things.
